Why Blog?
by Pastor @ St. Timothy ~ September 27th, 2008
Perhaps this is the question I keep asking over and over again. I think the reason why I am enduring the learning curve to blog, twitter and use facebook is so that I can communicate my thoughts and ideas about church, God, Jesus, etc., more effectively to “twenty-somethings” (although I think the breadth of that group is changing and growing. I know that teens are in it now and more and more “older” folks are exploring the possibilities.)
But there is a more specific reason. I feel we have an obligation to reach out to two “communities” that are around us: college students, in general – those away from home – but specifically over at Virginia Wesleyan. Now I know you say, “but they’re not Lutheran,” but I don’t think it matters. And the second group is young military folks both married and single – enlisted and officer. Now it might be that St. John’s is better located to take care of this second community – but I know that there are a number of enlisted folks living in the apartments around me – so they are only a few blocks from St. Timothy.
I have several issues with all of this. First and foremost is to try to discern whether or not this is really God’s call to us for ministry or is this just David Penman’s wild, wishful thinking. A second issue is I don’t know if one ministry could serve the needs of both communities, or would we have to provide something different for each. One thing I feel is that offering worship – and I’m not convinced it needs to be praise band – but offering a meaningful worship service at some time other than Sunday morning may be an opportunity for a host of people – in these two groups and beyond.
Speaking of meaningful worship, I guess I better put some polish on tomorrow’s sermon or we might not have very meaningful worship this week!
Blessings to all who might find there way to this site.
